Foods that are Dangerous to your Dog -      what about animal bones?

1 - Chocolate

Cooking chocolate and chocolate powders are the most toxic to dogs because they contain the highest amount of cocoa.  If your animal accidentally got a hold of a chocolate kiss they will probably be ok.  The amount of chocolate in most common day candy bars is actually pretty low.  The darker and richer the chocolate; the higher the danger.  If you notice they develop diarrhea, vomiting or staggered walking contact your veterinarian immediately.   If you are not sure how much your dog consumed call for help anyway.

2 - Coffee and Caffeine

We know how coffee affect humans, so you can imagine how it affects something much smaller.  Caffeine is not process by a dogs system in the same way as a human's.  It can lead to seizures or tremors for your dog.

3 - Onions and Garlic

Onions and Garlic cause blood related illness for your dog so the symptoms may not occur until days after eating them.  Symptoms are discolored urine, diarrhea and heavy breathing.  Baby food often contains onion powder, so this should be avoided as well.

4 - Grapes and Raisins

Grapes and Raisins actually cause liver and kidney damage in dogs.  The symptoms may not occur for a long period of time so be sure to keep these away from your animal.  A very small amount is enough to cause long term damage.

5 - Mushrooms

The Mushroom-Dog relationship is similar to the Honey-Baby relationship.  There are certain toxins in mushrooms that humans can handle and dogs can not.  These toxins can be deadly for your dog.   Just like babies shouldn't eat honey, dogs shouldn't eat mushrooms.

6 - Alcohol

There is really no explanation needed for this one.  Alcohol is poisonous to human systems as well, and a dog's system can't handle it like a human's can.  It's toxic to them and it's animal abuse to give it to them.  Symptoms that your dog has consumed alcohol range from slow heartbeat to seizures or coma.

Is it safe to feed my dog animal bones? -

No Chicken, Ham, Or Lamb bones.  They can shatter and shard causing serious choking hazards or digestive issues.  Beef bones are typically safest.  Make sure the bone is not hollow before giving it to your dog.  Animal bones seem very tough, but you might be surprised how easily your dog can destroy it.  Hollow bones become sharp and break into pieces when they chew them.
